"Aviron, nature, mangrove et Petit îlet de Génipa"
Our adventure begins at Fond Lahaye, a village in the municipality of Schœlcher, before following the gentle coastline towards Fort-de-France, overlooked by the majestic Pointe des Nègres Lighthouse. Along the way, the flotilla enjoys views of the impressive Lycée Schœlcher, one of Martinique’s most prestigious schools, which has educated many of the island’s leading intellectuals, including the renowned poet Aimé Césaire.
We then head into the Bay of Fort-de-France, recognised as one of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. The bay is home to Fort Saint Louis, a listed historic monument that also serves as a French Navy base. Adjacent to the old fortress lies the Grand Port Maritime of Martinique, whose extensive facilities make it one of the Caribbean’s major maritime and logistics hubs.
Leaving this side of the bay behind, we make our way towards the Bay of Génipa, a vast area of exceptional biodiversity that provides a sanctuary for numerous rare and protected species. Island by island, we eventually reach our destination: the small Îlet Génipa, a hidden gem belonging to the municipality of Rivière-Salée. Here, visitors have the opportunity to discover one of the outstanding natural heritage sites of Martinique’s southern Caribbean coast.
