Bayonne has always enjoyed a close relationship with its two rivers. A city of estuary, confluence and harbour, both river and seaport, Bayonne has been shaped by the Nive and the Adour, which have long served as vital links between the Basque and Gascon lands and the distant regions beyond the seas.
On Sunday, we will row upstream along the River Nive, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Its banks are lined with wetlands, including the Ansot Plain Nature Reserve, home to a rich biodiversity and an ideal place for birdwatching.
At the end of this first day, we will gather for a festive evening in one of Bayonne’s traditional peñas, housed within the city walls built by Vauban.
On Monday, we will row through the historic heart of Bayonne, where you will admire the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Mary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the town’s distinctive architecture, with its half-timbered houses and colourful shutters in the emblematic colours of the Basque Country. We will then join the River Adour and follow its course downstream towards the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean.
Our closing lunch will be accompanied by traditional Basque songs performed by a local choir.
