The Villerest lake is located on the Loire river, between Roanne and Saint Etienne. The original gorges have changed and become less deep but they now offer a long and quiet water body winding between villages and castles. Nestled between the Lyonnais and Forez mountains, the Loire valley boasts architectural treasures, including La Roche castle, to be discovered during the trip!
Perched unexpectedly in the middle of the lake, the castle seems almost out of place at first glance, yet it blends perfectly into its stunning surroundings. It is open to visitors and well worth a visit.
After passing beneath its walls, take the time to discover Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire. This picturesque medieval village, enclosed by both ancient ramparts and the waters of the lake, is said to have been a stopping point on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
